Our all-in-one tour!
According to the 1990 findings of the National Geographic Institute of France, Vilnius is the most central city in Europe. Vilnius has a current population of over 500 000 people, not just only Lithuanians, but also a sizeable population of Poles, Russians, Byelorussian’s, and Jews. For the years Vilnius prospered, attracting such diverse residents as the Slavs, Germans, Tartars and Jews – Vilnius came to be known as the Jerusalem of the North.
The Old Town, a historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Eastern Europe (360 ha). A hundred years ago it was said that no mater to which direction you looked in Vilnius you would always see at least four churches. And things haven’t changed till nowadays. Today’s Old Town is the product of different historical influence, but most conveniently it is described as the city of Late Baroque. Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
Modern Vilnius is a fascinated mix of old and new, with architectural influences from the diverse styles as Gothic, Italian Baroque, Classicism, Art Nouveau and the social housing of the Soviet Union.
