In 1993 Pope
John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses. Since then, not only the worshippers, but also the tourists, wishing to leave here a cross of their hope, visit this temple. The Hill of Crosses is located 250 kilometresfrom Vilnius, near
Šiauliai. The Hill of Crosses is the spiritual temple of many
Catholics. Crosses, “springing” in this place, for the first time were mentioned in the written sources in the 19
th century.

The
Soviet authorities tried to
destroy the Hill of Crosses, however unsuccessfully. Today the torment, hope, and thanksgiving of the people are commemorated by about 100 thousand of various crosses from nearly all countries of the world. In 2000 the
Minorities Monastery started operating at the Hill of Crosses.
